12 If you support others who preach to you, shouldn't we have an even
greater right to be supported? But we have never used this right. We
would rather put up with anything than be an obstacle to the Good News
about Christ.
Devotion
A couple of weeks ago, I had a friend of mine, DJ Will from
Jacksonville, on my radio show. He shared a testimony about being
arrested in Miami, Fl for essentially sharing the gospel with people.
He and a group of Christian Hip Hop artists went out on South Beach on
Saturday evening while all of the clubs were open and began passing
out CD's and tracts to spread the Good News to people. Without going
into all of the details, he was eventually arrested that evening.
Initially, he was frustrated. I've never been before, but I'm sure
being in jail on a Saturday night is not a fun experience. And while
being arrested was a painful experience, Will said he found comfort
knowing that he was doing the work that God had called Him to do.
Throughout the 9th chapter of I Corinthians, Paul talks about how he
had a right to demand a salary from the church at Corinth based on the
work that he was doing in that church. But when you look at other
passages in both his letters to Corinth, you can see that not everyone
trusted his intentions and motives. Paul knew that if he took a
salary, those distrustful feelings could intensify and the Corinthians
may not be receptive to the Word that God wanted him to share with
them. So instead, he made tents to support himself financially and
not "be an obstacle to the Good News about Christ." He was willing to
make that sacrifice.
This Word challenged me big time this morning. Many times we want to
do ministry or the work of the Lord, if it's nice and tidy. In other
words, we don't mind serving, as long as we don't have to sacrifice
anything. This just in…if Jesus didn't sacrifice, we wouldn't be able
to serve. And our sacrifices, pale in comparison to his sacrifice.
Are you willing to sacrifice, in order to do the work that God has
called you to do?
Grace and Peace,
Wade
